Get Better Acquainted With the Ants in Your Backyard!

 

All ants are not the same, nor do they look the same. Some species are more commonly found in certain areas than others would due to the climate and other factors. Speaking of which, here in the Charlotte, NC area, we certainly see our fair share of different ant species, whether you find several invading the food in your kitchen cupboards or you notice ants entering your home one by one through a crack in the foundation.

Ants Commonly Found in North Carolina and What They Look Like:

 

( petiole: term for the narrow waist of some ants )

 

 ·  Thief Ants: yellow and tiny

 

 ·  Little Black Ants: black and tiny

 

 ·  Imported Red Fire Ants: reddish-brown and small

 

 ·  Odorous House Ants: petiole reduced to a flattened strip

 

 ·  Argentine Ants: petiole with a standing node

 

 ·  Big Headed Ants: 2triangular petioles and the last few segments of the antenna slightly larger, forming a clubbed end

 

 ·  Winnow Ants: 2triangular petioles and its back has spines

 

 ·  Pavement Ants: 2square petioles and its back has spines

 

 ·  Asian Needle Ants: petioleis prominent and tall

 

 ·  Forelius Ants: rear end has a circular opening surrounded by small hairs
